by Thomas Carew (1595? - 1639?) and possibly by Robert Herrick (1591 - 1674)

The Primrose
(Sung text for setting by F. Bridge)
 See original
Language: English
Ask me why I send you here
This sweet Infanta of the year?
Ask me why I send to you
This Primrose, thus be-pearled with dew?
I will whisper to your ears:
The sweets of love are mix'd with tears.

Ask me why the flow'r does show
So yellow-green, and sickly too?
Ask me why the stalk is weak
And bending, yet it doth not break?
I will answer: -- these discover
What fainting hopes are in a lover.

Composition:

Set to music by Frank Bridge (1879 - 1941), "The Primrose", 1902 [ voice and piano ], from Two Songs [1902], no. 1

Text Authorship:

  • by Thomas Carew (1595? - 1639?)
  • possibly by Robert Herrick (1591 - 1674)
