Der Mensch soll nicht stolz sein
(Sung text for setting by F. von Suppé)
 See original
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  CAT
Der Mensch soll nicht stolz sein
Auf Glück und auf Geld;
Es lenkt halt verschieden
Das Schicksal der Welt:
S'hat Einem die Gaben,
Die gold'nen bescheert,
Der And're muß sie graben
Tief unter der Erd'.

 ...

Der Mensch soll nicht hassen,
So kurz ist das Leb'n,
Er soll, wenn er g'kränkt wird,
Vom Herzen vergeb'n.
Wie viel' haben hienieden
Den Krieg sich erklärt,
Und jetzt machen's Frieden
Tief unter der Erd'.

Der Mensch soll nicht lieben,
Wenn's ernst ihm nicht ist,
Gar schwer ist zu heilen,
Was Liebesgram frißt.
Wie mancher hat gebrochen
Ein Herz, lieb und wert,
Das endlich erst Ruh' fand
Tief unter der Erd'.

Note: the text set by Reger is often attributed to "C. Himer". It could be that the name was illegible on the original score.

Note for Suppé's setting: stanza 1, line 8, word 1 ("Tief") becomes "Ganz" in the repetition.

Composition:

Set to music by Franz von Suppé (1819 - 1895), "Der Mensch soll nicht stolz sein", published 1849, stanzas 1,3 [ voice and piano ], Wien, Haslinger

Text Authorship:

  • possibly by Joseph Carl Swiedack (1815 - 1888), as Karl Elmar, no title
