und singt sein schlichtes Abendlied,
Ein kleiner, scheuer Gast.

Das unscheinbare Vögelchen
rührt mich, wie es singt.
Mir ist, als ob mein eigen Herz
ihm aus der Kehle klingt.

Du unscheinbares Vögelchen,
wir beide sind verwandt,
wir kommen - du, dein Lied und ich -
aus Einem Heimatland.

A small, shy guest.

The inconspicuous little bird
Moves me as it sings.
It seems as if my own heart
Is sounding from the bird's throat.

You inconspicuous little bird,

From one and the same homeland.
