by Charles Mackay (1814 - 1889)
Translation by J. Reiß

Hoffnung
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the English
Lebet wohl, ihr schönen Tage
meiner frohen Jugendzeit,
unberührt von Schmerz und Klage,
holder Freude nur geweiht;
wo das Herz mit jedem Schlage
schwelgt in Himmelsseligkeit!

Lebet wohl, ihr schönen Stunden!
Ach, es schwand des Lenzes Pracht;
auch die Blüten sind verschwunden,
die er liebend mir gebracht,
und zum Freudenkranz gewunden
decket sie der Zeiten Nacht.

Was vergangen, kehret nimmer!
Gib es hin mit starkem Sinn,
denn es tritt im Morgenschimmer
eine Göttin zu dir hin:
Über Menschenglückes Trümmer
bleibt die Hoffnung Siegerin.
