Stille, stille! Baaden gynger hisset mellem Siv og Krat; Sødt en Mø ved Cithren synger I den lune Sommer Nat. Rene Toner, milde Lyst, hvor du strømmer i mit Bryst. Men hvad savner jeg og græder Mens hun dog saa venligt quæder. Det er ey den danske Tunge, det er ey de vante Ord, ikke dem jeg hørte siunge hvor ved Hytten Træet groer. Bedre er de vel maaskee, Ak! men det er det er ikke det er ikke de. Bedre troer jeg vidst hun quæder, men tilgiver at jeg græder.

Stille, Still, das Kähnlein schaukelt dorten zwischen Schilf un Rohr; Und des Mädchens Zauberstimme rührt beym Citharklang mein Ohr. Reine Töne, süße Lust, Ach! wie hebst du meine Brust. Doch was fehlt mir, warum Zähren? ihr Gesang kann sie nicht wehren. Es ist nicht die Muttersprache, die gewohnten Worte nicht, ach! nicht jene die ich hörte wo mein Mädchen Kränze flicht. Möglich, daß es besser schallt, mir klings aber allzu kalt. Besser singt sie, wie ich wähne, doch entschuldigt meine Thräne.
