by Eugène Manuel (1823 - 1901)

Prière du soir
Language: French (Français)
Je veux prier: l'heure est propice,
Déjà le voile de la nuit
De l'horizon remonte et glisse
Sur la ville où meurt chaque bruit.

Je veux reporter ma pensée
Vers l'image trop effacée
D'un Dieu qui n'a pas de rigueur,
Et rallumer, par la prière,
Quelques rayons d'une lumière
Qui s'éteint presque dans mon coeur.

Hélas! prends ton vol, ô mon âme, entr'ouvre tes deux ailes!
Tout semble t'inviter, le temps, l'heure et le lieu;
Soulage les ennuis qu'en secret tu recèles
Les hommes ont le jour, le soir est fait pour Dieu!
