by Henri Francois-Joseph de Régnier (1864 - 1936)

Chanson d'autrefois
Language: French (Français)
En l'an mil sept cent soixante,
Un soir, sur la Piazzetta,
Comme j'arrivais de Zante,
Ton sourire m'arrêta ;

L'antenne de ma galère
Luisait sur le ciel doré,
Au soleil couchant, derrière
La Dogana di Mare ;

J'étais, jeune capitaine,
Musqué, rieur, arrog-ant,
Et j'avais la tête pleine
Et de soleil et de vent ;

Je rêvais prise, abordage !
Mais ce fier rêve naval
Finit devant ton visage
Par un soir de carnaval,

Car, sous le blanc masque blême
Qui le cachait à demi,
Ô ma belle, l'Amour même
Pour toujours m'avait souri.

Confirmed with Henri de Régnier, Vestigia Flammæ, Paris, Mercure de France, 1921, pages 172-173.
