Schön Jungfräulein, was wird dir bang? Wach auf und schlag die Saiten an!« Schön Jungfräulein, die sitzt im Traum; Tannkönig tritt zu ihr herein, Und küßt ihr leis des Mundes Saum Und nimmt vom Hals das Güldkettlein. Da schlägt sie hell die Augen auf - Was hilft ihr Weinen all und Flehn? »Tannkönig, laß mich ziehn nach Haus, Laß mich zu meinen Schwestern gehn.« »In meinem Walde fing ich dich«, Tannkönig spricht, »so bist du mein! Was hattest du die Mess' versäumt? Komm mit, komm mit zum Elfenreihn!« - »Elf! Elf! das kling so wunderlich, Elf! Elf! mir graut vor dem Elfenreihn; Die haben gewiß kein Christentum, Oh, laß mich zu Vater und Mutter mein!« »Und denkst du an Vater und Mutter noch, Sitz' aber hundert Jahr allein!« Die Elfen ziehn zu Tanz, zu Tanz; Er hängt ihr um das Güldkettlein.

La lune claire déchire les nuages, Ses rayons percent à travers les sapins ; Au sol les elfes se réveillent, Les petits cors d'argent sonnent dans la vallée. « À la danse, à la danse, sur la pente rocheuse, Au bord du ruisseau clair, parmi les noirs sapins ! Belle demoiselle, de quoi as-tu peur ? Réveille-toi et frappe les cordes ! » Une belle demoiselle est assise dans ses rêves ; Le roi des sapins arrive et avance vers elle, Et l'embrasse doucement au coin de la bouche Et prend une chaînette d'or sur son cou. Alors elle ouvre ses yeux clairs – À quoi bon ses pleurs et ses supplications ? « Roi des sapins, laisse-moi rentrer à la maison, Laisse-moi rejoindre mes sœurs. » « Je t'ai trouvée dans ma forêt – Répondit le roi des sapins – donc tu es mienne ! Pourquoi as-tu manqué la messe ? Viens, viens dans la ronde des elfes ! » « Elfe ! Elfe ! Cela sonne si bizarrement, Elfe ! Elfe !
