Wann sich von des [Mittags Höhen]1
Schon die Sonne neigt zur Nacht,
Bleibt so mancher Lenz noch stehen,
Sieht uns freundlich an und lacht,
Blickt dann auf entlaubte Bäume,
Neigt sein holdes Angesicht --
Schenken kann er nur noch Träume,
Hoffnungsschwingen gibt er nicht.

When from the heights of noontide
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
When from the heights of noontide
The sun already inclines itself toward night,
Many a springtime still lingers,
Gazes upon us in a friendly manner and laughs,
It then looks upon defoliated trees,
Bows its lovely face --
All it can give us any longer is dreams,
It does not bestow pinions of hope.
