Van de koekoek en den ezel

Een koekoek en een ezel, die gingen eens in strijd
Om 't schoonst en 't hartigst zingen, 't was in de Lentetijd.
De koekoek sprak: "Hoor ezel!" en schreeuwde naar zijn zin.
"Dat kan ik vast veel beter!" viel plots de ezel in.
Wat klonk dat schoon en innig! . . . Hun zang versmolt zich dra
En immer klonk het luider: " Koekoe, koekoe, iaa!"
