C’était au bois, en mars, et le merle sifflait.
Elle allait devant moi, délicate et mignonne,
Et sa main me montra dans l’ombre une anémone
Rose, auprès de ses sœurs blanches comme du lait.

Je lui contai la fable antique : — le filet
D’où s’élance le dieu que la haine aiguillonne,
Adonis qui se meurt et l’herbe qui fleuronne,
Empourprée, à la place où son sang pur coulait.

Elle écoutait… Soudain aux ronces de la haie
Son doigt meurtri saigna… Ma bouche sur la plaie
Comme un vin capiteux but la rouge liqueur.

Goutte à goutte, le sang tomba dans ma poitrine,
Et, comme aux temps lointains de la fable divine,
La pourpre fleur d’amour s’entr’ouvrit dans mon cœur.
