by Matthäus Kasimir von Collin (1779 - 1824)

Nacht und Träume
Language: German (Deutsch)
Nacht! verschwiegne, sankst du nieder?
Nieder [durch die dunklen Räume
Wallen heimlich jetzt die Träume
In]1 der Menschen stille Brust,
Die belauschen sie mit Lust;
Rufen, wenn der Tag erwacht:
Kehre wieder heil'ge Nacht!
Holde Träume, kehret wieder.

Confirmed with Matthäus Edlen von Collin's nachgelassene Gedichte, ausgewählt und mit einem biographischen Vorworte begleitet von Joseph von Hammer. Zweytes Bändchen. Wien. Gedruckt und im Verlage bey Carl Gerold. 1827, page 134 (Nacht und Träume), page 149 (Nachtfeyer), and page 65 (Fortunats Abfahrt von Cypern).

Note: Collin's poem has been bequeathed to us in several different versions: There is this version, titled Nacht und Träume, published posthumously in 1827, and another version titled Nachtfeyer, published in the same volume. The poem has also been incorporated by Collin, slightly modified, in his dramatic fragment Fortunats Abfahrt von Cypern, where it is expressed by the Graf von Flandern during a moonlit night aboard his ship. The version set by Schubert (see below) in his song Nacht und Träume constitutes a further and earlier version, given to him by Collin in handwritten form.

1 Collin (Fortunats Abfahrt): "wallen auch die Träume, / Wie dein Licht durch diese Räume, / Durch"
