De nacht en laat haar bleeke luchter beven, 
Die gloeiend witte glanzen neer doet zweven
Om 't, rond de diepte reiend, rotsenheir.

En naar het rillend wak daalt sluimer neer,
Die, op zijn vlinderwieken aangedreven, 
Met droppen sprenklend rijs den dauw deed leven,
En zweefde in schaduw, peinzend, heên en weêr.

En in mijn droomend hulkje, dat er glijdt 
Langs 't bevend zilver, zet hij zich; ik zie
Hem teederblikkend over mij gebogen. 

Hij lacht mij aan, ontplooit de wieken wijd . . .
Ik hoor een sluimerende melodie, 
En weet niet wat niij loodzwaar viel op de oogen.
