Weisst du die Rose, die Du mir gegeben?
Der scheuen Veilchen stolze, heisse Schwester;
Von Deiner Brust trug noch ihr Duft das Leben,
Und an dem Duft sog ich fest mich und fester.

Ich seh Dich vor mir, Stirn und Schläfe glühend,
Den Nacken trotzig, weich und weiss die Hände,
Im Aug noch Lenz, doch die Gestalt erblühend voll,
Wie das Feld blüht um Sonnenwende.

Um mich webt Nacht, die kühle, wolkenlose,
Doch Tag und Nacht, sie sind in eins zerronnen.
Es träumt mein Sinn von Deiner roten Rose
Und von dem Garten, drin ich sie gewonnen.

Weet je de roos nog, mij door jou gegeven?
Van ’t schuw viooltje trots en fel de zuster;
En van jouw borst droeg nog haar geur het leven.
En, ja, die geur zoog ik in, steeds beluster.

Ik zie jou voor mij, slaap en voorhoofd gloeiend,
De nek uitdagend, zacht en wit je handen,
Je oog nog jong, maar je figuur al bloeiend vol,
Zoals ‘t veld bloeit in ’t zonnebranden.

Om mij weeft nacht, de koele, wolkenloze,
Doch dag en nacht, ze zijn ineengeweven,
Nu droomt mijn geest slechts van jouw rode roosje
En van de bloemtuin waar het werd gegeven.
