Denkst du des Abends noch, des hellen, Da mich der Winde leiser Zug Sanft über die entschlafnen Wellen An diese stille Küste trug? Da ich, ermüdet vom Gewühle, Das draußen toset früh und spat, Mit bang sehnsüchtigem Gefühle Vom hohen Schiff ans Ufer trat? Wie wehte da vom Bergesgipfel Ein leiser Hauch willkommner Ruh'! Wie rauschten der Zypressen Wipfel Mir den ersehnten Frieden zu! Die Stadt, von weißem Marmor glänzend, Das Weinlaub, Fenster und Altan Mit seinem dichten Grün umkränzend, Es sah mich so befreundet an. Die Männer mit gebräunten Zügen, Sie schienen alter Zeiten Bild; Und Mädchen wandelten mit Krügen Zum Brunnen, welcher tönend quillt; Und Buben schwangen sich im Tanze, Es floß der Wein, die Zither klang, Indes die Sonn' in rotem Glanze Langsam ins goldne Meer versank. Da sah ich dich zum erstenmale: Auf hoher Treppe standest du, Umwölbt vom rankenden Pokale, Und schautest still dem Reigen zu. Der Abendröte Strahl umspielte Dein Haar, zu träumen schien der Blick, Als ob dein Busen ahnend fühlte Der ersten Liebe nahes Glück. Wohl uns! Nun hat das Herz in Wonne Die Knospenhülle abgestreift; Nun hat des Südens heißre Sonne Die Frucht der Liebe schnell gereift. Wir haben Welt und Grab vergessen, In ihrem Laufe steht die Zeit, Und Palmen schatten und Zypressen Um unsre stille Seligkeit.
