O Mutter, o Mutter! welch liebliches Singen! Ach! hörst du die Harfen und Lauten klingen? Schlaf' ruhig, mein Kind! es ist ja der Schall Der leise flötenden Nachtigall, O Mutter, wie herrlich die Farben erglänzen, Sie schmücken mein Bettchen mit bunten Kränzen! Schlaf' ruhig, mein Kind! der röthliche Schein Des Abends blicket zum Fenster herein. O Mutter, es hauchen balsamische Lüfte, Es wogen süßathmende Weihrauchdüfte! Schlaf' ruhig, mein Kind! es ist nur der Hauch Vom würzigduftenden Rosenstrauch. O Mutter, sie lassen von Honig mich nippen, Sie netzen mir labend die durst'gen Lippen! Schlaf' ruhig, mein Kind! dich täuschet ein Wahn; Ich feuchte die trockenen Lippen dir an. O Mutter, es streichelt und faßt mich so linde, Es fächeln liebkosend mich laue Winde! Schlaf' ruhig mein Kind! ich trockne den Schweiß Von deiner Stirne so brennend heiß. O Mutter, es kommen von rosigen Hügeln Viel freundliche Kinder mit goldnen Flügeln! Schlaf' ruhig, mein Kind! die Wolken sie ziehn Am Abendhimmel gleich Lämmern hin. Sie kommen, sie kommen! sie winken und nicken! Sie rufen hinauf mich mit Liebesblicken! Es bleichte des Abends glühendes Roth; Das Kind im Bettchen lag still und todt.
