Trauerkunde

Am Fenster sitzt ein schönes Kind, 
Durch die Blätter draussen fegt der Wind. 

"Ich komme von Westen  --  was zitterst du?"
Und flüsternd nicken die Blätter sich zu. 

"Mich riefen am Wege auf weitem Plan 
Wohl tausend bleiche Gesellen an; 

"Nun hab' ich's eilig mit meinem Ritt: 
Ihre letzten Seufzer bring' ich mit. 

"Auf der Haide Einen ich liegen fand, 
Eine welke Rose in schlaffer Hand. 

"Er hob sie mühvoll zum Munde auf 
Und hauchte das junge Leben drauf."  --  

Am Fenster sitzt ein schönes Kind, 
Durch die Blätter draussen fegt der Wind . . .
