by Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz (1751 - 1792)

Unser Herz
Language: German (Deutsch)
Kleines Ding, um uns zu quälen
Hier in diese Brust gelegt,
Wüste mancher was er trägt,
Würde wünschen, thätst ihm fehlen.

Deine Schläge, wie so selten
Mischt sich Lust in sie hinein
Und wie sind sie schnell, mit Pein
Jede Lust ihm zu vergelten.

Dennoch, weder Lust noch Qualen
Wär weit schröcklicher als das.
Lieber schmelzt mein Herz zu Glaß,
Meines Schicksals heiße Strahlen.

Lieben, hassen, streben, zittern
Hoffen, zagen bis ins Mark.
Ach das Leben wär ein Quark
Thätest du es nicht verbittern.

Confirmed with Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz, Gedichte, Berlin, 1891, page 110, marked "B. a." in a set of three poems within a set of twenty-four.
