Un brûlant frelon vient se pendre
Au mol clocheton d’une fleur.
Ils s’unissent : on peut entendre
Un bruit volant, vibrant, ronfleur.
C’est un baiser cuisant et tendre,
Et la fleur feint de se défendre
Contre la flambante rumeur
Qui distend sa grâce ténue…

Puis le frelon, léger, repart.
On croit voir voler dans la nue
L’âme jaspée du léopard,
Cependant que, dans son calice
Remué, déchiré, rêveur,
La docile et constante fleur
Retient un meurtrier délice.

L’insecte n’a pas tant d’ardeur
Que cette fleur qu’il vient de fendre.
— Ô mon amour, peux-tu comprendre
Ce que c’est que la profondeur ?…
