by Nicolas Martin (1814 - 1877)

Jeune et vieux
Language: French (Français)
Hélas ! tu montes dans la vie,
Et je descends le front penche :
Tu planes légère et ravie,
Et je suis las d’avoir marché
Au beau ciel de ton innocence
Te rit encor tant d’avenir !
Je suis si pauvre en espèrance !
Je suis si riche en souvenir !

Incline-toi, douce colombe,
Vers un cœur s’ouvrant pour aimer
Moi je m’incline vers la tombe,
Moi je sens mes yeux se fermer.
Devant la blancheur de l'aurore
Doit s’éclipser la sombre nuit :
Mon dernier parfum s’evapore.
Ta jeune âme s’épanouit.

Confirmed with Nicolas Martin, Ariel. Sonnets et Chansons, suivis d’une traduction de Pierre Schlémihl : l’homme qui a vendu son ombre, Paris, Desessart, éditeur, 1841, page 122.
