by Alphonse Marie Louis de Lamartine (1790 - 1869)

Pourquoi me fuir, passagère hirondelle ?
Language: French (Français)
Pourquoi me fuir, passagère hirondelle ?
Ah ! viens fixer ton vol auprès de moi !
Pourquoi me fuir, lorsque ma voix t'appelle ?

Dans ce désert le destin nous rassemble ;

About the headline (FAQ)

Confirmed with Souvenirs poétiques de l'école romantique, 1825 à 1840, ed. by Edouard Fournier, Paris, Laplace, Sanchez, 1880, page 288. This version of the poem circulated anonymously until Lamartine identified it as his own in Les Confidences, 1849, and published it therein with changes. See that second version here.

Note: in The Book of French Songs, The Chandos Classics. Translated by John Oxenford, Esq., to which is added Miss Costello's Early French Poetry, London: Frederick Warne and Co., page 52, 1877, it is titled "L'Hirondelle et le Proscrit" and attributed to "Fougas".
