Die verliebte Verzweifelung
Language: German (Deutsch)
Ihr missvergnügten Stunden,
wie groß ist eure Zahl!
So mehrt nur Schmerz und Wunden
und tötet mich einmal!
Ihr aber, zarte Triebe,
kommt, schlaft nur mit mir ein.
Denn dieses, was ich liebe,
wird doch nicht meines sein.

Du Ursprung meiner Plage,
du rührst mich noch zuletzt;
die Wollust junger Tage
hat lange mich ergötzt.
Doch alles wollt ich missen,
mein Herz sucht Grab und Ruh;
o, drückte nur dein Küssen
mein brechend Auge zu.

See also the version of the poem that Haydn set to music. The two texts share a first stanza (with one small change) but nothing more. They might be disparate selections from a much longer poem.
