So still und heiss ist die Sommernacht,
Da bin ich jäh aus dem Schlaf erwacht,
Am Fenster duften die Linden --
Die Sehnsucht sitzt auf des Bettes Rand
Und winkt und winkt mit verstohlener Hand,
Und ich kann keinen Schlaf mehr finden.
 
Von fernher das Meer herüberrauscht,
Es zittert mein banges Herz und lauscht,
Kann nimmer den Morgen erwarten --
Weich geht der Nachtwind und seufzt und klagt,
Und ich folge hinaus, hinaus in die Nacht,
In den sommerduftenden Garten ...
