Schlafe, süßer Engel, schlaf! Hörst du Mutter singen? Hörst du's nicht? Bist doch erwacht! Seht, wie engelgleich er lacht! Muss zum Herzen dringen. Schlafe, Knabe, schlafe süß! Schlummernd sei im Paradies! Eiapopeia! Schlafe, liebes Söhnchen, schlaf! Hörst schon Mutter singen. Wirst du Engelsbub erst groß, Mutter sitzend auf dem Schoß, wird der Sinn dir's bringen. Schlafe, Kindchen, Tag und Nacht, bis dein inn'rer Sinn erwacht! Will auch leise lullen. Eiapopeia! Schlafe, süßer Engel, schlaf! Morpheus wird dich schützen. Sieh, im lichten Sternenglanz wirkt er dir des Glückes Kranz, wird dich ewig schützen. Schlumm're, Kindlein, sanft und still, wie dein frommer Engel will! Will auch leise lullen. Eiapopeia! Schlafe, holder Engel, schlaf! Seht die Händ' ihn heben! Will er mit der Mutter gar beten zu der Engel Schar, die im Himmel schweben? Schlafe, Knabe, schlafe ja! Engel sind dir immer nah'! Will auch leise lullen. Eiapopeia! Schlafe, lieber Junge, schlaf! Hoffnung will ich nähren! Fromm wirst du und brav und gut, auch in Leiden frommen Mut tugendhaft bewähren.
