When in the morning the screeching sirens create a horrible harmony; and, waking up the wretched workers, wake up the anxiety of the feverish work, I, tired, leave my hard bed without knowing whether I will ever see it again: I dress and eat, and I start walking, sad and anguished, on the dead street that leads to the smoky and confining hole of the tomb of the living. My wounded soul mourns its cruel and tragic fate. And I say: This is the sad cycle of the miner’s life; to descend in the morning without knowing whether at night there’s a return home.
