by Catulle Mendès (1841 - 1909)

Oubli
Language: French (Français)
Allez, vieilles amours, chimères,
Caresses qui m’avez meurtri,
Tourments heureux, douceurs amères,
Abandonnez ce cœur flétri !

Sous l’azur sombre, à tire-d’ailes,
Dans l’espoir d’un gîte meilleur,
Fuyez, plaintives hirondelles,
Le nid désormais sans chaleur !

Tout s’éteint, grâce aux jours moroses,
Dans un tiède et terne unisson.
Où sont les épines des roses ?
Où sont les roses du buisson ?

Après l’angoisse et la folie,
Comme la nuit après le soir,
L’oubli m’est venu. Car j’oublie !
Et c’est mon dernier désespoir.

Et mon âme aux vagues pensées
N’a pas même su retenir
De toutes ses douleurs passées
La douleur de s’en souvenir.

Confirmed with Catulle Mendès, Poésies, Bibliothèque-Charpentier, 1892, Tome premier, pages 261-262.
