by Philipp Engelhard von Nathusius (1815 - 1872)

Schlage ruhig, liebes Herz
Language: German (Deutsch)
Schlage ruhig, liebes Herz,
  Poche doch nicht mehr;
Wonach irrst du immer noch
  Wandernd hin und her?

Ziehen ew'ge Sterne nicht
  Droben wieder auf,
Führen, athmend goldnes Licht,
  Ihren stillen Lauf?

Ist nicht alles zu der Stund'
  Wie es gestern war,
Wie es morgen wiederum
  Sein wird, fest und klar?

Schwebt die dunenweiche Nacht
  Nicht — vom Abendhauch
Schaukelnd leis' getragen — sacht
  Über Flur und Strauch;

Deckt mit mütterlichem Sinn
  Alle Kinder zu,
Streicht mit sanfter stiller Hand
  Jedes Aug' zur Ruh'.

Webt die Well' im Geisterhusch
  Klimpernd um das Rohr;
Vogel blustert leis' im Busch
  Eh' es schweigt dem Ohr. —

Schlage ruhig, liebes Herz,
  Wolltest du allein,
Da im Einklang alles liegt,
  Friedenstörer sein?

About the headline (FAQ)

Confirmed with the anthology Album deutscher Poesie für Deutschlands Jugend, Plauen, Verlag von August Schröter, 1856, page 185.

Note: in many older editions, the spelling of the capitalized word "über" becomes "Ueber", but this is often due to the printing process and not to rules of orthography; so since the lower-case version is not "ueber", we use "Über".
