by Jean-Nicolas Bouilly (1763 - 1842)
Translation by August von Kotzebue (1761 - 1819)

Doch in des Mädchens Schoße
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the French (Français)
Doch in des Mädchens Schoße
erblick' ich, o wie schön!
noch eine junge Rose
und glaube, dich zu seh'n.
Ich eile, mich zu bücken,
erhasche schnell mein Glück
und gebe mit Entzücken
dir selbst dich selbst zurück.

Die Rose ist an Reizen,
das treu'ste Bild von dir;
doch scharfgespitzt durchkreuzen
auch Dornen sich an ihr!
warum hüllt jede Rose
sich streng in Stacheln ein?
sei du die dornenlose,
vollkommen schön zu sein!
