Ein Tor grämt' sich einst vor Begier,
dass er nicht wie ein Vogel hier
die Luft durchfliegen konnte!
Warum, spricht er, bin ich gebannt
an Erde nur, an Moor und Sand?
Ach, wer sich droben sonnte!

Er hört von jenem Ikarus
und hebt schon freudig Hand und Fuß,
doch geht's nicht von der Stelle.
Nun freilich, Dädals kühner Sohn
war durch die Luft der Haft entfloh'n,
doch fiel er in die Welle.

Was grämst du dich, du Erdenkloß?
Nie ringst du dich vom Staube los!
so hört er's mahnend tönen.
Wie Pegasus ein Flügelpaar,
auch du hast sie, doch unsichtbar;
erfüllt wird wohl dein Sehnen.

Die Geistesschwingen rege nur,
und du schwebst über Berg und Flur
zu Äthers reinen Höhen.
Zum Himmel selbst steigst du empor,
vernimmst der Geister heilig Chor,
ja, fühlst der Gottheit Wehen.

Begeist'rung leih' die Flügel dir,
du trinkest Seligkeit schon hier
aus reiner Dichterquelle.
Und was die Seele dir durchdrang,
das ströme aus in Hochgesang;
solch Lied weiht uns're Schwelle.
