De laatste maal dat 'k om zijn graf kwam dolen,
Was de aarde er violet van rouwviolen
 
Die donkre bloemen waren mijn gedachten,
Die vlugge vogels daar als zaden brachten.
 
Ik heb ze lief, die sombere gezichtjes,
Omzweefd van vlinders en van zonnelichtjes.
 
Ik ken ze, ik groet ze bij haar namen, allen,
Wel wist die vogel, wáár hij 't zaad liet vallen.
 
Fluweelen bloemen, donkere gedachten
Van gouden dagen en van zwarte nachten,
 
Gedoopt met bittren dauw van stille tranen,
O bloemen, die zoovelen zielloos wanen!
 
O mijn gedachten, bloeiende symbolen,
Brengt hem mijn laatsten groet, o rouwviolen!
