Sous les Lilas
Language: French (Français)
Available translation(s): ENG

Under the lilacs
Language: English  after the French (Français)
Under the flowering lilacs, as shadows fell,
I saw her for the first time one evening:
The gold-spangled sky was already darkening.
To hear herself dream, she slowly went to sit
beneath the flowering lilacs, as shadows fell.

Under the flowering lilacs, how we loved.
Like white birds in a springtime sky,
we let our souls fly free in the blue,
children heedless of time and weather.
Under the flowering lilacs, how we loved.

Under the flowering lilacs, whither I faithfully return.
I wait in vain. She will never return!
She will never return, but everything speaks to me of her
and the sod has preserved her footprint,
under the flowering lilacs, whither I faithfully return.
