by Albert Verwey (1865 - 1937)

Doodendroom
Language: Dutch (Nederlands)
Strooi geureloos-witte violen
Rondom mijn peluw neer,
Want te middernacht zie ik ze dolen,
De schimmen aan 't lichtloos meer. --

Zij komen in lange gewaden
Met bleek, gebogen hoofd,
En murm'lende of zij baden
Om wat de dood belooft . . .

Zij staren en strekken henen
Hunne armen over 't meer --
En de zwarte wateren weenen --
En stenende keeren zij weer.

Doch over den schouder houden
Ze op mij de blikken gevest --
Ik voelde op mijn ziele hun kouden,
Verstorvenen mond geprest. --

Tot deinzende in de hallen,
Die scheemren, ver en vaal,
Hun voeten klankloos vallen
op 't echo-loos portaal . . .
