Der Turm des Nero

Glaubwürdiges Wort, wohnt anders es noch beim Volk,
Dann stieg, da er hieß anzünden die Stadt, dann stieg
Auf jenen Turm schaulustig Nero,
Und übersah die Flamme Roms.

Mordbrenner umher aussendete sein Machtwort,
Bacchantinnen Gleich, trug Jeder des Fests Pechkranz;
Dort aber stand auf goldner Zinne
Der Kaiser, der die Laute schlug.

Hoch rühm ich das Feur, sang Jener, es ist goldgleich,
Ist wert des Titans, der's keck dem Olymp wegstahl:
Zeus Adler trägt's, und einst empfing es
Des Bacchus ersten Atemzug!

Komm, leuchtender Gott! Reblaub in dem Haar, tanz uns
Weichfüßige Reihn, eh vollends die Welt Staub wird:
Hier magst du dir Roms Asche sammeln,
Und mischen deinen Wein damit!
