Toen Liefde vlood, een hoonlach om de lippen,
Wrong Hoop de hande' en weende om weeldedood.
- Maar 't golvend water blonk van gulden stippen
En heel de hemel bloeide in avondrood.
 
De vrome boomen ruischten: - ‘Laat den krippen
Rouwsluier vallen, die u zien verbood.
Aanschouw alleen, dan zal uw wee ontglippen.
De Schoonheid bleef, hoewel uw Liefde vlood.’
Toen liet mijn Hoop zich troosten en verdwazen
Door spel van licht en kleur, dat Schoonheid bood.
 
Nu doemen lokkend, als door rozeglazen,
In de enge cel, waarin mij 't leven sloot,
Beloofde landen, schoon gelijk oasen,
Die 'k nooit zal zien, in droom van avondrood.
