Die heilige Elisabeth an ihrem Hochzeitsfeste Verließ den stolzen Fürstensaal, Verließ heimlich die Gäste, Ging in den dunkeln Wald hinaus, Wo eine heilge Kapell erbaut, Der Mutter Gottes zu dienen! O Mutter Gottes, welches Leid, Ich muß jetzt von dir scheiden! Die letzten Blumen bring ich heut, Fort muß ich, ich muß meiden Jetzt deinen heilgen Gnadenort Muß weithin in die Fremde fort. Ade du Heilandsmutter! Du Bild, so heilig, gnadenreich, Mein Aug steht voller Zähren, Daß ich jetzund dich nicht mehr schau, Das will mich schier verzehren; Leb wohl, leb wohl, du Mutter mein, Mit deinem lieben Kindelein! Ade, zu tausendmalen! Sie betet, flehet also lang Und will darob nicht beben, Daß sich ein scharfes blankes Schwert Jetzt über ihr erhebet; In reiner Gnade schwebt ihr Blick, Und achtet nicht des Räubers Tück, Der sie da will ermorden! Santa Elisabet, a la festa de noces, sortí de la superba sala principesca, deixà dissimuladament els convidats, i anà a l’obscura forest on s’havia erigit una santa capella per venerar la Mare de Déu! Oh, Mare de Déu, quina pena, ara m’haig de separar de tu! Et porto avui les últimes flors, haig de marxar, ara m’haig d’allunyar del sagrat lloc de la teva gràcia, me’n haig d’anar a l’estranger. Adéu a tu, mare del Salvador! Tu, imatge tan santa i plena de gràcia, els meus ulls són plens de llàgrimes, car d’ara endavant no et veuré més, i això em consumeix de pena; adéu, adéu, mare meva, amb el teu estimat infant! Mil vegades adéu! Ella prega, implora molt de temps i no tremola pas quan una lluent i tallant espasa s’alça al seu damunt; el seu esguard sura en pur estat de gràcia, i no presta atenció a la perfídia del bandoler que la vol assassinar! Quan el bandoler s’adona d’aquest esguard, i veu la santa dona, li agafa un profund remordiment, el seu cor s’atemoreix. Deposa la seva espasa i la seva pica, es deixa caure de genolls i gosa contemplar-la. Els àngels de Déu són al teu voltant per protegir l’ornament dels teus rínxols, tota la vida m’haig d’agenollar davant teu, oh dona, oh plena de virtut, prega per mi, perquè Déu el Senyor tingui pietat de mi i en la seva gràcia em beneeixi.
