by Ludwig Heinrich Christoph Hölty (1748 - 1776)

Gottlob, daß keine Kette mehr
Language: German (Deutsch)
Chosen for Diff
Gottlob, daß keine Kette mehr
An diesem Arme klirrt,
Kein Teufel, mit gezücktem Wehr,
Mich Rudernden umirrt!

Der ganze Himmel schwebt um mich,
Die Schöpfung ist mir neu;
Dich hab' ich, süße Freiheit, dich!
Gott! frei bin ich, bin frei!

Der Bliz des Christen fraß dein Bot,
Du wütiger Korsar;
Sein Donner brüllte Höll' und Tod
Auf deine Räuberschaar.

Da wimpelte das Siegspanier,
Da tönte Siegsgesang;
Die Eisenkett' entklirrte mir
An meiner Ruderbank.

Nun flieg ich meinem Rheine zu,
Nach dem ich oft geweint;
Und sind an seinen Ufern Ruh,
Ein Weib, und einen Freund.

Und trink' aus meinem irdnen Krug,
Mit Weinbeerblüth umlaubt;
Und trinke jedem Fürsten Fluch,
Der uns die Freiheit raubt;

Und Segen jedem braven Mann,
Deß Herz für Freiheit schlägt,
Der gerne eider dich, Tyrann,
Die Freiheitsfahne trägt.
