by Friedrich Heinrich Karl, Freiherr de La Motte-Fouqué (1777 - 1843)

Wie lang' nur willst Du klingen
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG
Wie lang' nur willst Du klingen,
    Du feines Zitherspiel?
Wonach doch mußt Du ringen,
    Hat Jedes ja sein Ziel.

Es klingt zu Lieb' dem Sänger,
    So lang' er singen will,
Und singt einst der nicht länger,
    Wird auch die Zither still.

Ist dann vorbei das Klingen,
    Fällt wohl dem Wandrer ein:
Man hört ja nicht mehr singen;
    Er muß gestorben sein.
