Weh, daß ich mußte schauen Dein Auge wonnig blau! Gram fühl' ich nun und Grauen, Wo ich dein Aug' nicht schau. Darf ich's nicht ewig sehn, Macht Leid mein Herz vergehn. O strahle selig helle, Du Aug’, du Himmel mein, Da taucht, ein Vöglein, schnelle Mein Sehnen sich hinein. Da atmet’s Lab’ und Licht, O schließ den Himmel nicht! Euch trägt, ihr frommen Seelen, Zum Himmel hoch der Flug, Euch kann da nichts mehr fehlen, Doch mir ist’s nicht genug. Ach! daß ich selig sei, Braucht es der Himmel zwei.

Note: see also Thoinot Arbeau's "Belle qui tient ma vie", which appears to be the unattributed source of the melody of both Cornelius's setting and Reger's arrangement, for which he used the text above, also unattributed. Both texts mention blue eyes but are otherwise unrelated.
