Morgenglanz
Language: German (Deutsch)
In der Dämmrung Schatten ganz
Liegt der Pfad noch, den ich walle,
Aber, sieh! in hehrem Glanz
Strahlen schon die Höhen alle!
Freudig schau' ich unverwandt
Nach den Bergen lichtumflossen;
Bald auch ist das weite Land
Rings vom Schimmer übergossen.
O! wie solche Morgenstund'
Andacht mag und Lob entzünden!
Horch, o horch, wie Gottes Mund
Süßen Trost dir will verkünden:
Mußt du dunkle Wege gehn,
Frisch in seinen Rath dich schicke!
Wo die Berge flammend stehn,
Dorthin richte deine Blicke!
Bald wird sich des Lichtes Strahl
Mild auf deinen Pfad ergießen,
Und von Freud' und Dank zumal
Wird das Herz dir überfließen.

Morning radiance
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
My path still lies utterly in the shadow
Of twilight, [the path] that I wander,
But lo! in sublime radiance
All the heights are already gleaming!
Joyfully I gaze steadfastly
To the mountains engulfed in light;
Soon the broad landscape is also
Flooded with shimmering all around.
Oh! how such a morning hour
May ignite reverence and praise!
Hear, oh hear, how the mouth of God
Wishes to announce sweet comfort to you:
If you must walk dark paths,
Give yourself up resolutely to His counsel!
Where the mountains stand aglow,
Direct your gaze over there!
Soon the beams of light shall
Gently pour over your pathway,
And in simultaneous joy and gratitude
Your heart shall overflow.
