by Albert Verwey (1865 - 1937)

Rozen
Language: Dutch (Nederlands)
Ik boog me over de rozen,
Ik dronk hun zoete geur,
Mijn oog genoot hun blozen,
Hun fijne en helle kleur.

Ik keurde 't scherpe steken
Van doornen op hun hout,
Ik trachtte een af te breken,
Een harde en spits-geklauwd.

En 't klein-tandig gebladert
Spotte in zijn donkre groen:
Dwaas, die mijn rozen nadert
En vraagt hoe dorens doen!

Confirmed with Albert Verwey, De ring van leed en geluk, C.A. Mees 1932 p.36
