Waldrast
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Wo tief der Wald voll Tannen,
Das wilde Gras so weich,
Ein Zauber muß mich bannen,
Hin streck' ich mich sogleich.
Und wo ein Vogel singet,
Im Grund ein Bächlein rauscht,
Im Herzen nach es klinget,
Die ganze Seele lauscht.
So hebet seine Schwingen
Nicht rasch der flücht'ge Wind,
Als die Gedanken dringen
Wie Lerchen auf geschwind.
O nennt es Müssiggehen,
Gott grüß, du schöne Welt!
Mögt' ihr zur Erde sehen,
Ich schau' zum Himmelszelt.

Resting in the Woods
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Where deep in the forest full of firs
The wild grass is so soft,
I am held by an enchantment,
I immediately lie down [upon it].
And where a bird sings,
[Where] in the depths a brooklet rushes,
The sounds echo in my heart,
My entire soul listens.
The fleeting wind does not
Lift its wings as quickly
As my thoughts press upward
Rapidly, like larks.
Oh call it idleness,
God greet you, you lovely world!
May the rest of you look toward earth,
I look up to the vault of the heavens.
