Hinauf und hinab, 
Im Herzen ists traurig 
Und todt wie im Grab. 

Mein Schatz ist gezogen 
Ins wildfremde Land, 
Er hat mir vertrauet 
Ein Ringlein zum Pfand. 

Das Ringlein von Silber 
Ist zierlich und fein,
Gar schön ist sein Name
Gegraben hinein.

Und wenn auch der Name
Muß einmal vergehn,
Im Herzen, da bleibt er 
In Ewigkeit stehn.

My sweetheart has departed
For a totally unknown land,
He entrusted to me
A little ring as a pledge.

The little ring is of silver,
Is delicate and fine,
His name is quite beautifully
Engraved therein.
