by Friedrich Wilhelm Weber (1813 - 1894)

Welch unsel'ge Zeit! Der Fremdling
Language: German (Deutsch)
"Welch unsel'ge Zeit! Der Fremdling
Herr im Land, gehöhnt die Treue,
Krank das Recht, der alte Glaube
Tot, und rätselhaft der neue.

Wär' ich grau, verschmerzen könnt' ich
Alle Mühsal, die gewesen,
Und im Sterben von des Lebens
Langem Siechtum bald genesen.

Jugend heischt und hofft; verloren
War mein Dringen und mein Werben!
Frommt es nicht, der Welt zu leben,
Tut es not, der Welt zu sterben.

Glücklich, wer von ihr geschieden
Eine Siedelei sich baute
Und vom Gartenfleck am Walde
Neidlos in das Wirrsal schaute;

Oder, wenn der Geist ihn triebe,
In der Klosterzelle säße
Und, ins Ewige versunken,
Zeit und Erdenleid vergäße!"
