Frauenlob
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG
Choose for Diff
  Wenn holde Frauen blicken
Hernieder vom Altan,
O Lust, ein Lied zu schicken
Zu ihrem Lob hinan!
  Was uns mit Lächeln kündet
Der Augen süße Nacht,
Gleich hallt's, zum Lied entzündet,
Im Chor zurück mit Macht.

  Und will's der Mund verschweigen,
Und winkt nur scheu die Hand:
Wir machen's uns zu eigen,
Bald klingt's von Land zu Land!
Wo singt durch Wald und Auen
Ein Vogel gleicherweis,
Wie wir hinauf zum Blauen,
Der Frauenhuld zum Preis?

  Und was die schönen Hände
In's weiße Feld gestickt,
Was zaubrisch uns ohn' Ende
Voll Gluth entgegenblickt,
  Wohl mögen wir's verstehen:
Wie Blüthen seltner Art,
Drum holde Lüfte wehen,
Ist Minne süß und zart!

  O rausche, stolze Fahne,
Hinein in unsern Sang,
An's höchste Ziel uns mahne,
Du Edle, lebenslang!
  Und mit dem Siegeskranze
Sei jederzeit geschmückt,
So lang in deinem Glanze
Noch frisch ein Lied uns glückt!

In praise of women
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Choose for Diff
  When lovely women gaze down
From the balcony,
Oh joy, to send up to them
A song in their praise!
  That which the sweet night
Of their eyes conveys to us with smiles,
Ignited into song, it immediately resounds
Powerfully back to them in a choir.

And if their lips wish not to speak of it,
And if their hand only shyly waves:
We make [their message] our own,
[And] soon it resounds from land to land!
Where does a bird sing in the same manner
Through forest and meadow,
As we [sing] up into the blue
In praise of women's grace?

And that which their lovely hands
Have embroidered into the white field,
That which without end magically
Gazes at us full of fervency,
  We may well understand it:
Like rare blossoms
About which lovely breezes waft,
Love is sweet and delicate!

  Oh rustle, proud flag,
Into our singing,
Urge us on to the highest goal,
You noble one, all our lives!
  And be ever adorned
With the wreath of victory,
As long as in your radiance we still
Have the good fortune to produce a brisk song!
