Serenade

Vorüber rauschten träumerisch die Wogen,
  Im klaren Äther schwamm des Mondes Kahn,
Wir standen auf verwittertem Altan,
Hoch über des Rialto mächt'gem Bogen.

  Die Fackeln glühten, die Raketen flogen,
Und majestätisch kam auf dunkler Bahn
Ein singender, lichtfarbner Riesenschwan
Die leichtbewegte Flut einhergezogen.

  Wie Feuerfliegen, schwärmend in der Glut,
Treibt Bark' um Barke plätschernd durch die Flut,
Und jauchzend grüßt das Volk von Strand zu Strande.

  Vom bunten Flatterlicht emporgeschreckt
Aufglühn,wie aus versteintem Traum geschreckt
Die Marmorschlösser am Canale grande.
