Da fahr' ich vorbei an dem Baum in dem Feld,
Mir ist's, als müßt' er mich kennen,
Er sah's ja, wie Nichts so heiß in der Welt,
Als das Scheiden, das Scheiden thut brennen!
Kein Wunder, daß ihm die Blätter damal
Hinsanken am Hag auf den Rasen,
Bald hatte ja mir und der Liebsten, o Qual!
Zur Trennung das Hörnlein geblasen!
Nun aber, wie steht er schön weiß und roth
Voll Blüthen, als hätt' er's vernommen,
Daß vorüber, vorüber die bittere Noth,
Und die Liebste heim ist gekommen!
Wie freun wir uns Beide nun, ich und der Baum!
Gott hüt' ihm die rosige Blüthe!
Und mir und der Liebsten den seligen Traum
Der Minne tief im Gemüthe!

There I pass the tree in the field,
I feel as if it must know me,
For it saw how nothing in the world burns
As terribly as parting, as parting!
No wonder its leaves dropped to the grass
By the grove back then,
For soon, oh agony, the horn had blown
For my and my beloved's parting!
But now, how it stands there beautifully white and red,
Full of blossoms, as if it had perceived
That the bitter misery is past, is past,
And my beloved has come home!
How happy we both are now, I and the tree!
May God guard its rosy blossoming!
And [may God guard] for my beloved and me
The blissful dream of love deep within our spirits!
