Ein musikalischer Tauf‑Gruß und "Toaste"
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG
Heil und Segen für und für!
Mein liebes Kindchen! Wünsch' ich Dir!
Wachse lustig! -- froh heran!
Und werd auch du ein großer Mann!

Im Großen stets das Größte sein!
Im Guten wähl' das Best' allein!
Rein nur wie der Edelstein!
Laß dein kleines Herzchen sein!

Werde nur wie Großpapa!
Dessen Geist auch dir heut nah!
Wähl wie er das große Schöne! --
Meister werd' auch du der Töne!

Hältst du diese Regel ein!
Wirst wohl auch du der Beste sein
Nur bleib' dem Himmel treu fortan!
Dann wirst auch du ein großer Mann!

Note: There are two autographs of Lang's composition. The first version is very much a working copy and almost impossible to decipher. The text was therefore taken from the second version (a clean copy) and no footnotes for the first version are provided.

A musical christening greeting and "toast"
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Salvation and blessings forever and ever!
My dear little child, I wish you!
Grow up merrily and happily!
And may you, too, become a great man!

In great things always to be the greatest!
In goodness choose only the best!
Always pure as a jewel
Let your little heart be!

Only become just like your grandfather
Whose spirit is also near you today!
Choose like him the great beauty
And become a master of sounds as well!

If you follow this rule
Then you too shall be the best[.]
Only remain true to Heaven from here on!
Then you, too, shall become a great man!
