by Rainer Maria Rilke (1875 - 1926)

Das arme Kind
Language: German (Deutsch)
Ich weiß ein Mädchen, eingefallen
die Wangen. -- War ein leichtes Tuch
die Mutter; und des Vaters Fluch
fiel in ihr erstes Lallen.

Die Armut blieb ihr treu die Jahre,
und Hunger war ihr Angebind;
[so ward sie ernst. --]1 Das Lenzgold rinnt
umsonst in ihre Haare.

Sie schaut die lächelnden Gesichter
der Blumen traurig an im Hag
und denkt: der Allerseelentag
hat Blüten auch und Lichter.
