by (Friedrich) Julius Hammer (1810 - 1862)

Über dem See
Language: German (Deutsch)
Als wären die Wasser geschlafen ein
im Spiele mit dem Mondenschein,
so ruhig liegt [er auf dem]1 See.
[Ade!]2
Du herzgeliebte Fischerin,
weißt nicht, dass ich [noch]3 nah' dir bin.
Eh' ich für immer geh' -
[Ade! Ade!]2

Ich [habe]4 dir schon, bevor's getagt,
mein letztes Lebewohl gesagt.
[Nun steh' ich]5 immer noch am See.
[Ade!]2
Wie tief der Wasser fels'ger Schlund,
sie kommen endlich doch zum Grund,
doch grundlos ist mein Weh' -
[Ade! Ade!]2

Im Dunkel dort drüben liegt dein Haus;
warum ging noch das Licht nicht aus,
das [ich herüberschimmern]6 seh'?
[Ade!]2
Wenn Armut nicht zu Armut soll,
sei dir die Zukunft friedevoll,
ob ich für immer geh' -
[Ade! Ade!]2

View original text (without footnotes)

Note: Rheinberger split each stanza in half to make a strophic song with six stanzas. As Hammer's half-stanzas are not rhythmically identical, Rheinberger had to make the substantial changes to the text.

1 Rheinberger: "der"
2 Rheinberger: "Ade! Ade! Ade!"
3 Rheinberger: "so"
4 Rheinberger: "hab'"
5 Rheinberger: "Steh'"
6 Rheinberger: "leis' ich schimmern"
