Lang und breit war ich gesessen Überm schwarzen Kontrapunkt; Auf ein Haar dem Stadttrompeter Gaben sie mich zum Adjunkt. Hei, da bin ich ausgerissen; Schöne Welt, so nimm mich nun! Durch die Städte will ich schweifen, An den Quellen will ich ruhn. Nur die Fiedel auf dem Rücken; Vorwärts über Berg und Strom! Schon durchschreit ich deine Hallen, Hoher kühler Waldesdom. Und ich streich die alte Geige, Daß es hell im Wandern klingt; Schaut der Fink vom Baum hernieder: «Ei, Herr Vetter, wie das singt!» Doch am Horizonte steiget Eines Städtchens Turm empor! -- Welchen kleinen Lilienohren Geig ich dort mein Stücklein vor?
